Biography of Karl Berger

Pianist, vibraphonist, composer, conductor and Jazz educator Dr. Karl Berger is the founder of the Woodstock Creative Music Studio (CMS) and the teaching concept "Music Mind". He is a six-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll as a jazz soloist, recipient of numerous composition awards and commissions by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, European Radio and Television: WDR, NDR, SWF, Radio France, Rai Italy, including the SWF-Prize 1994.

He holds the position of Professor of Composition, Artist in Residence at universities, and festivals wordwide and has received a Ph.D in Music Esthetics.

Dr. Berger is founder and director of the Creative Music Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the research of the power of music and sound and the elements common to all the world’s music forms.

In the 1990s, Dr. Berger was Professor of Composition and Dean of Music Education at the Hochschule für Musik, Frankfurt / Germany. He was named Chairman of the Music Department at UMass Dartmouth in 2006.

Dr. Berger is re-establishing CMS programming in collaboration with producer Rob Saffer, and is directing the CMS Archive Project. He continues to produce, record and perform internationally.

Er ist sechsmaliger Gewinner der Downbeat Critics Poll als Jazzsolist und erhielt zahlreiche Kompositionspreise und Aufträge der National Endowment for the Arts, des New Yorker Staatsrates für Kunst, der Rockefeller Foundation, des European Radio and Television: WDR , NDR, SWF, Radio Frankreich, Rai Italien, SWF-Preis 1994.

Er ist Professor für Komposition, Artist in Residence an Universitäten und Festivals und hat in Musikästhetik promoviert.

Dr. Berger ist Gründer und Direktor der Creative Music Foundation, Inc., einer gemeinnützigen Gesellschaft, die sich der Erforschung der Kraft von Musik und Klang und der Elemente widmet, die allen Musikformen der Welt gemeinsam sind.

In den 1990er Jahren war Dr. Berger Professor für Komposition und Dekan für Musikpädagogik an der Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt am Main. 2006 wurde er zum Vorsitzenden der Musikabteilung von UMass Dartmouth ernannt.

Dr. Berger stellt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Produzenten Rob Saffer die CMS-Programmierung wieder her und leitet das CMS-Archivprojekt. Er produziert, nimmt auf und tritt weiterhin international auf.
