Monty Alexander

Submitted by Professor Rich Falco. Interviews with WICN Radio Host Chet Williamson

“Alexander, like film-maker Alfred Hitchock, thrives on suspense and surprise, forever challenging the listener to anticipate his next move, whether a mid-stream shift in key, rhythm, tempo, texture, chord progression, or even song form.”
-All About Jazz

Montgomery Bernard "Monty" Alexander is a legendary, Grammy-nominated Jamaican jazz pianist, born 6 June 1944 in Kingston. He is documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in “The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time” (Hal Leonard Publishing).

In 1961 he moved from Jamaica to Miami and in 1963 to New York City, where he established himself as a solid member of the city’s jazz scene. At the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, Monty was recommended to Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, owner of Germany’s MPS label. Between 1971 and 1985 Alexander recorded twelve albums for that label.

The Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2018 The University of The West Indies bestowed him with an honorary doctorate degree (D.Litt) in recognition of his merits.

In 2012, the Institute of Caribbean Studies in Washington, D.C. honored him with the Luminary Award. In 2012 he also received the German Jazz Trophy, A Life for Jazz.
