Biography of Vlad West

Submitted by Professor Rich Falco. Interview by Tom Bellino (Planet Arts)
"In his combination of grittiness and lyricism, blues feeling and sheer drive, he has few equals, in Europe certainly and even in America."
-Frederick Starr, Former President of Oberlin College

Vlad West, known in Russia as Vladimir Sermakashev, was a child prodigy. Born in Baku (Russia) he studied piano from age three and composition from age five. At that early age he was playing solo piano concerts at Baku Conservatory while studying composition and arranging. He began playing saxophone at a later time.

West discovered jazz at the age nine and by age 16 he was already a well known jazz musician in Moscow. In 1963 he moved from his birthplace of Baku, Azerbaijan to Moscow where he joined the Sakun KM-Quartet which was the house band at the Molodezhnoe Cafe.

His jazz quartet has performed extensively throughout Europe and the U.S. and has appeared in many international jazz festivals and jazz clubs (East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Yugoslavia, Latvia, Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Estonia). He also performs with his wife, vocalist Linda Kunkin who often sings in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, Russian, and many other languages.

He received attention in Europe and America including publications such as the Village Voice, Jazz Forum and Downbeat Magazine. Downbeat has this to say about West's playing: “His rhythmic sense is simply unbelievable, and he is, I would say, swimming in rhythm.”

Vlad has had an amazing career in film scoring. He has composed, arranged and scored music for full orchestras for nine movies in Russia, some of which were released in the United States where he currently resides. Vlad has written the music for the Public Broadcasting production of “To America With Love.” He was also the inspiration behind and the music consultant, saxophonist and story consultant for the movie “Moscow on the Hudson” (Columbia Pictures). Vlad was the theme song composer, arranger and performer for the PBS Broadcasting: documentary “To America with Love” .

In his jazz career and festival performances, West has shared the stage, sit-in gin with Duke Ellington,, Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra, and many other jazz greats. While Vlad was hosting jam sessions at a Jazz café near Moscow, touring musicians regularly sat in, including members of the Duke Ellington Band as well as Gerry Mulligan, Keith Jarrett, Charles Llyod and many others. This close contact with American Jazz musicians supported Vlad’s decision to move to the United States in 1974. He now resides in NYC.

“You must say hello to Vlad. He has his own voice and a story to tell.”
-Dan Morganstern, Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University.
